Culture Night 2016

Alchemy Music Presents

Culture Night

A varied musical evening for all ages and tastes

Friday 16th September, 7pm – 9pm

Nun’s Cross Church, Ashford, Co. Wicklow

Alchemy Music are delighted to host a free-of-charge Culture Night celebration of music for all the family!

Ashford-based Marta Nielsen is highly versatile musician comfortable performing jazz, tango, classical music on accordion and piano.

Subtle evolution defines Vyvienne Long’s musical work between her years collaborating and touring with Damien Rice and her transformation into a composer, songwriter and arranger in her own right. Admired as a compelling vocalist and songwriter of incisive wit, critics have drawn comparisons with Björk, Tori Amos and Joanna Newsome.

‘Vyvienne Long is a boldly inventive creator of silken riches’: RTE

All residents of Wicklow, Teach a’tSléibhe are the intertwining of three elements: singer, Ger Fitzgerald, whose eclectic range of songs will enthrall you in melody and lyric with a voice soft and clear as well water; the renowned and masterful uilleann piping of Joe McKenna; the uniquely expressive fiddle playing of Paul Bradley. Like the Mountains of Wicklow, Teach a’ tSléibhe are much more than the sum of their parts.

Spring is in the air and there is a rare musical treat in preparation for the eve of St Valentine’s Day. Renowned Dublin-based concert series, Kaleidsosope Night, is joining forces with Wicklow’s Alchemy Music Series to stage a concert of great variety and beauty – featuring Jazz, Renaissance and Baroque choral music, Cuban music, Traditional Irish music. Vocal group The Stickleback Singers will join Jazz guitar genius Mike Nielsen and Alchemy regulars, Sonamus, featuring Cormac Breatnach (whistles) Annette Cleary (cello), Rachel Factor (harpsichord) and Eamon Sweeney (guitars).
Music on the night will include Elizabethan song by Renaissance musicians, John Dowland and Thomas Morley; a setting of The Song of Songs by 17th-century composer Heinrich Schutz, George Gershwin’s Someone to watch over me, original compositions by Mike Nielsen, Traditional Irish music, Turlough O’Carolan, and more.
Taking place in the beautiful Nun’s Cross Church the atmospheric music will be enhanced by candlelight, discrete stage lighting, the subtle skill of esteemed sound engineer, Adrian Hart…. and a nice cup of tea or coffee.
